Zimbabwes prime minister Morgan Tsvangirai is in Europe on a tour to try to get European countries and heads of state to lift sanctions against his country. As I wrote on this blog in february this is a very akward situation indeed. Morgan Tsvangirai is the prime minister in the Zimbabwean government that is still ruled by Mugabe the man the sanctions have been intended to remove. Mugabe is still there and it is still far from clear if the unity government where Morgan Tsvangirai is ranked fourth (the top three are all ZANU PF people) will be able to achieve any real change for the Zimbabweans. Let us remember this.
We all want to do our best to help the deprived people of Zimbabwe but lifting sanctions and thus recognizing a government where the tyrant Robert Mugabe is the chief executive officer, aka president. Are we helping the people of Zimbabwe by helping Morgan Tsvangirai help Mugabe stay in power? Or are we helping Robert Mugabe stay in power and at the same time receive some form a recognition as a legitimate president? which he off course is not!
I have said it before and I will keep saying it many times more I fear; there is no future for Zimbabwe unless Mugabe is removed and preferably held to justice for his crimes against a nation. Therefore I say we cannot accept the former opposition leader Morgan Tsvangirais new role as Robert Mugabes errand boy. We must find other ways of helping the Zimbabwean people. There is no quick fix but this one: dethrone Mugabe!
Governments of so called national unity like the ones in Kenya and Zimbabwe where the president steals the elections and then forces the legitimate winners to negotiate for a (small) slice of power cannot be accepted, ever! When European heads of state are negotiating with Tsvangirai I hope they keep in mind who his boss is and what he has written on his CV.
